All About Dry Eye

When healthy, the tear film’s 3 layers work together to ensure your eye surface remains protected and hydrated. Dry eye occurs because of a malfunction in any of the tear film layers, causing inadequate hydration and resulting in redness, itchiness, and scratchiness.

There are 2 common types of dry eye:

Aqueous deficient dry eye refers to when your body doesn’t produce enough tears
Evaporative dry eye is more common & occurs when you don’t produce high-quality tears

In 80% of cases, dry eye is caused by a condition called meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD).

MGD occurs when the oil glands that produce the protective outer layer of your tear film are clogged. Without delivering the essential oil to the tear film, your tears evaporate faster and leave your eye surface exposed to elements such as wind, dust, and debris.

iLux is a handheld device designed to gently apply heat and pressure on the eyelids to relieve meibomian gland dysfunction. After determining the appropriate treatment zones, we apply pads and then use the device to soften your blocked glands and release the oil to improve tear function.
